He felt that all were “intensely interested” in the novel process of making a film.
He said. “You don’t know where to go…You’re caught! ” Yet in most later interviews Hitchcock tended to suppress the memories of the terror he must have experienced, and chose to concentrate instead on some of the war’s tragi-comical moments which he associated with his mother. One evening he returned home to find that artillery fire had exploded near his house. He rushed into his mother’s bedroom, to find her trying to put on her clothes while still wearing her nightgown. ” In a third anecdote he was sheltering under a table with his mother while, kneeling, she continually crossed herself.
Hitchcock may have learned the techniques of German expressionism as a filmic exercise, but it is more likely that the works of Murnau and others touched something that lay deep within his personality. It also became clear to him that in the German system of film-making the director was always the most important element—not the actor, not the scriptwriter, not the cameraman, but the man sitting or standing beside the camera who gave the orders. Murnau treated his actors as puppets who had only to obey his instructions.
